SONG BACKGROUNDS, DETAILS, and PRESS RELEASES

The WHMIS Warble

In my job as a safety officer for the Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada high school where I teach science, it is my annual responsibility to teach my colleagues about the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS). The topic can be quite dry. To spice things up this year, I wrote the WHMIS Warble. Judging by the standing ovation I received by our staff of close to one hundred people, it was a good decision.

The music video (launched December 2010)  rose in popularity across Canada and throughout the world.  Over 10 200 YouTube hits have been recorded as of March 2012.  Rave reviews have appeared in The USA Today and over twenty other publications.  Safety trainers at schools and other workplaces are now using The WHMIS Warble in their training programs.  I hope you enjoy it.

The HAZCOM Song

A USA Today reporter saw my WHMIS Warble and asked me to "Americanize" it. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in the U.S. has HAZCOM (Hazard Communication Standard) instead of WHMIS so The HAZCOM Song was born. (I was tempted to call it "American WHMIS" but The Guess Who might have protested)

The music video (launched March 2011)  quickly rose in popularity across The United States and throughout the world.  Over 12 800 YouTube hits have been recorded as of March 2012.  Rave reviews have appeared in The USA Today and over twenty other publications.  OSHA safety trainers are now using The HAZCOM Song as part of their presentations. I hope you enjoy it. Thanks also to CKUW-FM (U of Wpg Radio) for playing this in March 2012.

Won't Start Texting

ZoomSafer.com , a company dedicated to reducing distracted driving, saw The HAZCOM Song.  They were so impressed that they asked me to write a song about the dangers of texting while driving - Won't Start Texting was the result. Judging by the "early returns",  it was a good move.

The music video (launched mid-July 2011)  is rising in popularity throughout the world.  I wrote a guest blog in Truck Driver Solutions and rave reviews are beginning to appear in  other publications.  Driver Education instructors are telling me that they are using this song in their courses. Over 8 500 YouTube hits have been recorded as of March 2012. As an aside, I have posted an extended version (3 min.) of Won't Start Texting which has the truck driver negotiating even more perils as he moves his goods from east to west.

The Won't Start Texting song has been featured on the CBC nationwide TV Special - Canada's Smartest Person , CKUW-FM, and Canadian Propaganda - 92 Kamloops.

Further, in 2011, Won't Start Texting Won a Major Prize in a Winnipeg Free Press Contest  and was featured on Calgary Now Television

Grow a Muzzy in Movember (2011) and Grow a Muzzy (2010)

Movember is an initiative to raise funds for prostate cancer research. Men grow a moustache and sport it for the whole month of November. There are sponsors, contests and parties - all for a very good cause. My co-workers and I registered on ca.movember.com and I wrote Grow a Muzzy in 2010. I sung this song A cappella. Over 2 000 YouTube hits have been recorded as of March 2012.

For Movember 2011, I released Grow a Muzzy in Movember. In this version, Sheena Grobb, a Manitoba folk singer, performs the ditty while playing the piano. It is fantastic (if I do say so myself!)
and over 4 700 YouTube hits have been recorded as of March 2012. Further, in 2011, the song was featured on Red River College (Wpg) Radio Station, Thompson Rivers University (Kamloops) Radio Stn and University of British Columbia (Vancouver) Radio Stn + CTV Calgary Late Night Television News

A Modern Science Teacher

Being a high school Science Teacher is my day job. On the occasion of my 50th birthday in 2012, my brother, an Education Professor, wrote me the song "A Modern Science Teacher".  It is all about the various teaching methods that Science Teachers use. Hopefully you will enjoy it.   If someone wants to make sketches for this song (or make it into an animation or live action music video), please let me know at marsht9@yahoo.com
